Our troops need your help
While we eat homecooked meals with family and sit on our couches watching TV with friends, our soldiers are in the desert heat, sand in their food, getting shot at, watching friends die, keeping watch all night & marching at dawn. The least we can do is send them care packages. Join Rebecca’s friends, family and co-workers in cheering up our troops.

Whatever your feelings about the President and the war, these men and women are our soldiers—who have committed themselves to serving our country. Let’s honor their service by supporting them now.

Help me assemble 100 care packages for soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Give something, whether it's $5 or 5 granola bars or 100 batteries or $100.

Donations accepted through the end of 2008 (or until our troops come home!),
but I'm trying to collect as much as possible before Thanksgiving (November 27, 2008).
Our packages are being mailed by Cape Cod Cares for Our Troops , founded by 15 year-old Dylan DeSilva when he was only 12. Dylan has the names of 700 soldiers waiting for care packages—let’s supply him with 100 packages for those soldiers. If you know someone who is serving overseas, give me their address and I'll make sure we send a package to them.
How to help: You can--
  1. buy quantities of particular item(s) (e.g., 20 toothbrushes, 50 Powerbars)
  2. send me money (cash/check), and I'll buy the items
  3. ask your local merchants to donate items (or match your purchase)
  4. ask your family, friends, co-workers, and house of worship to donate items; forward this flyer to friends & family
  5. ask your employer to make an in-kind donation
  6. all of the above!
hygiene & misc. supplies

Know anyone who works for a company that makes...
toiletries (toothpaste, deodorant)? batteries? food items (granola bars/nuts/trail mix)? powdered drinks (sports drinks/hot chocolate mixes/lemonade/iced tea)? hotel/airline (toiletries samples)?

Care Package Items: (print list)
(Please buy only what's on this list. Ask me if you have ideas for other items--but, for example, I have more than enough chapstick.)
a letter from you
(Letters are the most requested item! Put both your e-mail and mailing address on it, so the soldier can reply; remember--don't discuss politics or the war, but you can thank them for their service; we can re-use the same letter for multiple packages; address it to "Dear Serviceperson"; e-mail me the letters and I'll print them out)
misc*
(batteries (AA, AAA, D), bootlaces, sunscreen, moleskin, anti-itch cream, bug lotion, footpowder, over the counter allergy and cold medication, duct tape, cotton rags/shammies/old t-shirts)
entertainment items
(Sudoku/crossword puzzle book, used paperback books, gently used music CDs, deck of cards; magazines--cars, sports, foreign policy, history, travel, The Economist, Atlantic Monthly)
food & drinks
(food: granola bars/power bars, beef jerky, crackers, cookies, dried fruit/nuts in single serve packs;
drinks: tea, single-serve packs of coffee, lemonade, iced tea, Gatorade, hot chocolate mixes)
gifts for Iraqi & Afghani children
(stickers; crayons; rulers; pencils, pencil sharpeners, & erasers; toys--beanie babies, birthday party favors, matchbox cars)
hygiene items*
(chapstick; deodorant, razors; toiletries samples from hotels)

We have enough, so please don't buy the following:
Tips

NO chocolate
(in granola bars/ cookies)—it melts in the desert heat

• Make sure expiration date is 5 - 6 months from now

• all food/drink items must be in single-serve bags

no big bottles (12oz shampoo)

4-8oz are ok (sunscreen, bug lotion)

full size toothpaste & deodorant are ok

no liquids (juice)
hygiene items* (toothbrushes, soap, toothpaste);
for women: (pads & tampons; Midol);
other: (Purell bottles--soldiers need wet/dry wipes, not Purell bottles)

Note: This list is updated based on items needed at a particular time, so check back here/e-mail me to see what's needed before shopping

*Why do soldiers need soap, toothbrushes, and bootlaces? Because the army doesn't supply them--soldiers have to buy them at the PX, which is hard to do if you're in a forward unit.
