Whether I'm writing a grant, gathering data on outcomes to present to elected officials, or creating communication materials--I'm advocating for you, your clients, and your cause.
When I volunteered for the Massachusetts Coalition to Save Darfur (www.savedarfurma.org), I created powerful communications materials and advised them on how to improve their website. The postcards and flyers I created describe the genocidal attacks on African villagers simply and effectively. Designing the logo for the Coalition was a challenge, since most people didn’t know where Darfur is. Using a map of Sudan solved that problem.
I have been involved in several campaigns, most notably fighting the 2002 ballot initiative, Question 2, that sought to eliminate ESL and bilingual education in Massachusetts. I wrote several editorials, one of which was published, created flyers, and networked with other language acquisition professionals to determine the best strategies for defeating the referendum. I am particularly proud of the slogan I created, "It takes more than a year to learn a language," since I feel it reached voters better than the official slogan did.
